Abstract We present a sequential topology and shape optimization framework to design compliant mechanisms with boundary stress constraints. In our approach, density-based method is used generate the configuration of mechanisms. Afterwards, node-based invoked obtain an exact representation. A specialized, optimality criteria-based update formulated for optimization. To avoid impractical hinges point connections, constraints are imposed. The imposed using two strategies: Local on nodes or global P-norm in domain. Further, adaptive refinement strategy adopted increase space capture fine-scale details geometry. Finally, numerical experiments presented, showing that proposed approach can be effectively applied
